Heliophysics

Helio Physics

Physicists are trained through internationally competitive research and contribute to the scientific and technological development of South Africa and the world. The knowledge of the physical environment is therefore enhanced and inter alia the following aspects of space physics accentuated:

  • The earth's upper atmosphere and magnetosphere
  • The sun and its sphere of influence (heliosphere)
  • Exploiting the unique conditions in Southern Africa, e.g. clear dry skies
  • Utilising unique expertise in computational and numercial modelling synergy of astrophysical information
  • The use of cutting-edge research equipment, e.g. a neutron monitor network (Antarctica, Hermanus, Potchefstroom and Tsumeb) and ionospheric probes in Antarctica, as well as data from space probes (eg. Ulysses and Voyagers 1 and 2
  • The High-Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) gamma ray telescope (Namibia ) and national and international astronomical facilities, e.g. the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) and the Hartbeeshoek Radio Astronomy Observatory (HartRAO) and state-of-the-art computer technology
